Horween Chromexcel® Leather Side - 2nd Quality

Chromexcel® is the original pull-up leather, made by Horween in Chicago using a chrome tannage followed by a bark retan from a proprietary recipe. Each side is hot stuffed with a blend of natural oils and greases, then given a full aniline, hand-rubbed finish that leaves the natural grain visible. The result is a rich, supple leather with a pronounced pull-up: the color lightens where the leather is bent or stretched, and light scuffs can be rubbed back out by hand. With wear, Chromexcel® deepens into a warm, lived-in patina while staying soft and durable for years.

These sides are graded as seconds by Horween, offering the same character and performance at a better value for makers willing to cut around a few imperfections.

Colors: Black, Brown, Burgundy, Dark Olive, Natural, Navy, Whiskey

Cut: Side

Chromexcel® Leather Specs:

  • Grain Type: Full Grain
  • Grain (Top): Smooth and waxy with pull-up
  • Grain Flesh (Back Side): Unfinished, smooth
  • Finish: 100% Aniline
  • Dye: Hand stained
  • Temper (Stiffness): Semi-soft - (Soft and pliable. Little to no firmness)
  • Type of Leather: Bovine (cow)
  • Tannage: Chrome Tanned
  • Grade: 2nd Quality (graded by Horween)
    • These sides didn't meet Horween's first-quality standard due to natural or cosmetic imperfections, such as:
      • Brands
      • Healed scars and tick bites
      • Small holes
      • Loose grain in some areas, most often near the belly
      • Drawn or wrinkled grain
      • Wax bloom: excess wax on the surface that buffs out easily with a cloth
      • Crease or fold marks
      • Color or finish inconsistency
      • Irregular shape or cut, including tannery swatch cuts
    • Don't let the "2nd Quality" mislead you: this is still very good Chromexcel, with the same feel, pull-up, and character as first quality. The trade-off is that you'll need to be more selective about where you cut and plan your layout around a few areas to avoid. For makers who can work that way, the cost-to-yield value is excellent.
    • Avoid using loose areas for high-stress parts like straps.
